What is scarier than a Daylight Savings time change on Halloween?!
Who in their right mind thought this was a good idea?!
First thing, if you aren’t worried and you aren’t changing anything, THAT IS FINE. If your mind set is, “I will just start fresh the next day with the new time and go with it". That is fine! Most kids are go with the flow when it comes to time changes, so if it works for your kiddo, IT WORKS LEAVE IT ALONE.
If your kiddo has a sensitive body clock, then we have some tweaking we can do so that we aren’t AS subjected to that body clock!
So, what is going to happen this year, for daylight savings? On Sunday morning, at 2am, our clocks back will turn back one hour to 1am. Therefore a child whose body clock normally wakes at 6am could possibly wake at 5am, the new time!
How can we do our best to avoid this super early wake up? Little tweaks leading up to the time change should help. That means for a few days before the time change, shift all sleep (naps and bedtime) a touch later. Myself, I shift all sleep 10-15 mins later than the usual timing. The day before the change, I move all sleep 30-60 mins later, depending on what the kiddos can tolerate. It is a little dance between pushing their sleep times a little later and an over tired kiddo. Watch your child, respond to any sleepy cues you see while at the same time, seeing how far you can stretch their sleep times before the time change happens.
Best of luck in the Daylight Savings Time lottery! May the odds be ever in your favor!
